Only between 2% and 3% of the estate's vineyard is used for the production of our two wines. The rest of the wines are sold to different customers who are looking for a good quality grape à la carte. The fact of using such a low percentage implies a careful care and a very high selection in field that guarantees the best grapes.
The parcels grapes destined to produce our wines are:
1.40 ha of Carbernet Franc, on a terrace on the slope above Córcoles River facing the west. It is a low hill of the river with river stone on the surface, first sandy loam horizon, gravy and alluvial clays from the river at a depth of one meter.
Cabernet Franc, from a Saint Emilion massal selection, with a density of 4,273 vines/ha and Sprawl system facing north-south 15º East which annual average production is 3000 kg/ha.
It produces full bodied wine with hits and structure, but with an amazing elegance that needs long aging to improve itself. All this parcel grape is totally destined and is the base of the N-A wine, exceeding the 70% of its composition in some vintages.
3.79 ha of Tempranillo above Córcoles River terrace with river stone on the surface, a first sandy loam horizon, gravy in intermediate horizons and alluvial clays at a depth of 1.6 meters, slightly slope to the East. In this parcel there are 16 lines of grapes destined to Atencia wine making and the grapes are trained and treated in a very special way.
Tempranillo Long cycle Tempranillo from a massal selection of Douro River region from Portugal, Sprawl system with a density of 3,700 vines/ha and orientation. In this parcel there are 16 lines specially trained and treated for our winery (0.85 ha), with and annual average production of 5,000 kg/ha.
The wine from this grape is one of the lightest of our wines in terms of body and hints. Fresh and very fruity in the nose. Fresh fruit and intense is highly tasted on palate and destined to Atencia wine making. This wine is light and fresh in mouth and nose.
2.21 ha of Merlot in a terrace of Córcoles River with a slope oriented to the East, river stone flat on the surface, first sandy loam horizon, gravy and alluvial clays at 1.4 meters.
Merlot Long cycle Merlot from a massal selection brought from Chile, is arranged in Sprawl with a density of plantation of 3,700 vines/ha. Productions are made in the order of 3,000 kg/ha and a high level grape selection.
The wine produced in this parcel usually has a medium hint and body. It is marked and characteristic in the nose, extraordinarily intense and complex. Due to the varietal character, it tends to give vegetal notes and it is vital not to rush the harvest and to achieve a great ripening of pips and skins to avoid pyrazin touches. It has a percentage of 5-20% participation of N-A wine production.
2.13 ha of Tempranillo in glass of old vines, in South-West slope above Córcoles River, sandy loam soil of considerable depth with some river stones on the surface and gravy and clays in depths of more than 2 meters. From this parcel are chosen 0.44 ha in the high side of the slope to Atencia wine production.
Cencibel in the traditional Manchegan glass of wine, aging circa 60 years, with a density of 1,600 vines/ha and an average of production of 4,000 kg/ha.
Middle structure and body wine, quite fresh and fruity, mixed with Tinta de Toro and Tempranillo from La Casa del Río and Syrah are the components of the Mediterranean part of Atencia wine composition (over 60%).
13.10 hectares of Tinta de Toro, orographically it is a small valley with two subparcels, Paseo de Arriba and Paseo de Abajo. Paseo de Abajo that stands out for its quality, the soil is loam and sandy of great depth (1.5 m), going after towards horizons of gravel and limestone sands.
Tinta de Toro from a massal selection of Toro (Zamora) trellis system of 3,333 plants per hectare reaches an average production of 5,000 kg/ha in the area destined for our winery, 8 lines of slope to the West of Paseo de Abajo (1.03 ha).
Good body and structure wine, a bit rustic if the skin is not very well ripen, it stands out for its ripe red fruits. This wine is essential for Atencia wine production.
In this parcel of 17.05 ha, there is an East slope zone with intermediate sandy loam and deep limestone horizons in depht. It is composed by 2.99 ha of Syrah and 5.20 of Petit Verdot. 12 banks have been selected from Syrah and are destined to Atencia. And from Petit Verdot have been selected 14 and are destined to N-A wine.
Syrah, is made of a mixture of cloned selections from Rodano region, with a density of 3,850 vines/ha and Sprawl system. The annual average production is 5,000 kg/ha.
Petit Verdot, from a Medoc massal selection and a density of 3,850 vines/ha and Sprawl system. Its annual average production is 4,000 kg/ha.
Syrah, destined to Atencia uses to be a good structured, hinted, bodied and complex wine. It is very intense in the nose and full and persistent in the mouth. It presents mineral touches, blood, and smokes. This is the wine in which the coupage of the Meditarrean part is more marked.
Petit Verdot, one of those that contains more tannins and polyphenols is between the 15-20% in N-A composition. It is intense, ripe, complex and strong.
11.65 ha of Cabernet Sauvignon. Orographically it is a small valley with three sub parcels very well defined. The piece of low hill, river stone slope oriented to the East, with intermediate sandy loam and limestone horizons at depth. This s the chosen one to produce the type of grape that we work with and it is about 24 rows designated to Atencia wine production.
Cabernet Sauvignon, from the low hill sub parcel (3.88ha), arranged in simple Guyot pruning trellis, 3,850 plants per hectare with less than a grape kilo per vine. About 24 rows (1.0 ha) are selected and managed differently which grape is destined to Atencia production.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon always destined to Atencia production, is the base of the 40% of varieties that we call as Atlantic on its composition. It uses to be a very good structured and acid wine.
11.51 ha in flat piece of land of Merlot. The land is limestone with superficial sandy loam horizon, intermediate sandy and limestone in depth. It is formed by three parcels: Canos I, II and III.
Merlot the part destined to our winery are 20 rows (1.04 ha) of Canos III sub parcel (3.16 ha) form a selected clon in Bordeaux, simple cordon royat trellis system and 3,700 vines per hectare, North-South 15º E oriented.
Our part of the parcel performance is never superior to 3,000 kg/ha.
It is not always a component of our wines, it is a fact of later years where the cycles are longer and we consider that peels and pips have ripen correctly. It produces very floral wines with high acidity level and very sweet in mouth. These wines are destined to Atencia production.
